Lesson plan — Understanding depression assignment for students to complete in the classroom

Instructions for Students: Create and Conduct Vocabulary Activities for Your Peers

You will design two activities for another group based on vocabulary from the article. Follow these steps carefully to ensure your activities are clear, engaging, and effective.

Step 1: Preparation (20 minutes)

  1. Read the Text

    • Select 12-15 key terms from the article. These should be advanced words or phrases (e.g., neuroticism, dysthymia, serotonin inhibitors, cognitive behavioral therapy).
    • Highlight terms related to the article’s main topic to ensure relevance.
  2. Research Definitions

    • Use a dictionary, glossary, or the article itself to find precise definitions.
    • Simplify the definitions into clear, understandable language that your peers can work with.
  3. Understand Usage

    • Look at example sentences in the article or create your own. Ensure each example shows the word used in context (e.g., “Dysthymia is a long-term form of depression that may not seem as severe but lasts for years.”).

Step 2: Create Matching Definitions Activity (10 minutes)

  1. Prepare the Activity

    • Write your selected terms in one column and their simplified definitions in a second column.
    • Mix up the definitions so they don’t align with the terms.
  2. Format the Activity

    • Example:
      Terms:

      1. Neuroticism
      2. Dysthymia
      3. Serotonin inhibitors

      Definitions:
      A. Medications that impact neurotransmitters to relieve depression symptoms.
      B. A personality trait linked to stress and negative emotions.
      C. A persistent depressive disorder lasting two or more years.

  3. Write Clear Instructions

    • Include these directions at the top:
“Match each term to its correct definition by writing the corresponding letter next to the term. You will have 5 minutes to complete this activity.”

Step 3: Create Sentence Creation Activity (10 minutes)

  1. Prepare the Activity

    • Select 5 of the terms from your list.
  2. Write Clear Instructions

    • Example:
“Use each term in a meaningful sentence that reflects its correct usage. Be creative and make sure your sentence demonstrates the word’s definition clearly. For example: Serotonin inhibitors are often prescribed to patients with major depression.
  3. Provide Support

    • Include sample sentences (not the answers) in case your peers need help understanding the task.

Step 4: Organize Materials (10 minutes)

  1. Prepare Handouts

    • Write out both activities clearly on a handout or presentation slide.
  2. Prepare an Answer Key

    • Ensure you have the correct answers for the matching exercise and examples of appropriate sentences for the second activity.

Step 5: Run the Activities (15 minutes)

  1. Introduce the Activities (2 minutes)

    • Explain the purpose of each activity and give your peers instructions.
    • Example: “The first activity will test your ability to match terms to definitions. The second will help you use the terms in real-world sentences.”
  2. Supervise the Activities (10 minutes)

    • Monitor as the other group completes your exercises. Provide hints if needed but let them think critically.
  3. Feedback and Discussion (3 minutes)

    • Go over the answers and provide explanations for any mistakes.
    • Ask your peers how they felt about the activity:
      • “Was it too easy, too hard, or just right?”
      • “Did the sentence creation help you understand the terms better?”

Reflection and Homework

  • Reflect on how creating the activities deepened your understanding of the vocabulary.
  • Revise any sentences from the activity based on peer feedback.

This approach will give students ownership of their learning while promoting collaboration and critical thinking.
